How to do basic SEO

How to do basic SEO search engine optimization setup instructions

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, which is the practice of increasing the quantity and quality of traffic to your website through organic search engine results.

Where paid adverts may land you at the top of Google for your chosen search terms, SEO done well will do the same but for free and give you organic traffic to your store.

Most business owners do both paid adverts and SEO to increase traffic to their sites.

The first thing to focus on is brand-related SEO. That means you want customers to find your store if they search for your name.

Start by adding a site title and tagline.

  • Get Started Menu
  • Edit logo
  • Below the logo, you should see an option for adding a shop name or company name and further down a tagline. Edit these settings to showcase what you think potential customers will insert in their search terms when looking for your brand/business name.

Next, you want to "register" your site with Google.

Check out this great article by Hubspot for further info on how to achieve this:

Then lastly, you want every page to reflect your keywords and search terms that you think potential clients would use when searching for products and services similar to yours. For example if you're selling birthday cakes, try opting for something more specific like "birthday cakes Randburg" as the term "birthday cakes" may be too vague and allow for too many other competitors to be listed before you. That being said, it is not guaranteed that you will rank on page 1 automatically and SEO takes time and is based on several factors.

1. Site speed:

3. SEO Title Tag:

4. Meta Descriptions / Meta Tags:

Once you are satisfied, update the page.
Now do the same on every product.

  • Scroll down the page to SEO settings
  • Click on "Edit Meta" to edit the SEO settings
  • Update when completed

5. Header Tags:

Make sure you are using a variety of H1 to H6 headers on your content and use your keyword search terms frequently. H1 headings should reflect the most important keywords that you wish to rank in Google.

For example, WAPPoint uses the search term "Mobile Debit & Credit Card Machines" in their H1 heading and "Accept Card Payments In Your Business" in their H2. This helps Google identify that they want to rank for card machines for business owners who need to accept card payments.

6. Keyword Consistency:

Make sure you use your most important keywords or phrases repeatedly throughout your content as Google bots will count the number of times a word comes up and use this for ranking criteria. Obviously, you need to apply this without repeating content or irritating visitors as this will cause a higher bounce rate, and then you will lose traffic and ranking over time.
